Chemistry and Biochemistry Summer Research Program

TThe Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Illinois University has successfully completed our three-year National Science Foundation supported Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. We will not be hosting our program summer 2020, as we seek to renew funding for our program for summer 2021.

Overview

NIU's 10-week program will provide novel research experiences for undergraduates and faculty/undergraduate student teams. Research opportunities include a broad range of chemistry and biochemistry areas, such as chemical synthesis, drug discovery, nanomaterials, protein engineering and computer modeling. Matched with an NIU faculty mentor, participants will gain vital interdisciplinary research skills using state-of-the-art instrumentation within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Activities will also include workshops on scientific communication, lab safety, responsible conduct in research, as well as student research seminars and an end of program student poster session.

Faculty, applying as part of the faculty/student team, are expected to visit NIU for two weeks during the summer to participate with the students in the summer research program and collaborate with NIU faculty.

Primary selection criteria include academic record, career objectives and letters of recommendation.

Stipends

All participants will receive a stipend of $5,000 (free housing will be provided for all students).
