NIU Northern Regional History Fair
Northern Illinois University is proud to host the annual Illinois History Day program on February 22, 2020 and be an affiliate of National History Day.
Our program is supported by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield and the Chicago History Museum.
Illinois History Day began in 1947 as a publication entitled Illinois Junior Historian and later Illinois History sponsored by the Illinois State Historical Society. By 1963 the monthly essay and art contest for the magazine soon grew into physical fairs where students could show off their talents and craftsmanship.
Illinois History Day is an annual state-wide academic competition in which students can create a wide variety of projects (exhibit, research paper, website, documentary, or performance) about an aspect of Illinois history. Students from sixth grade through eighth grade participate in the Junior Division and students from ninth grade through twelfth grade participate in the Senior Division.
Illinois History Day consists of four regions; Northern, Central, Southern, and Chicago Metro. Students will participate in their respective regional competitions in hopes of being selected to participate in the state competition that will be held in Springfield on May 7, 2020.
The Northern Regional competition will be held on February 22, 2020 this year at Northern Illinois University.
Northern Illinois Regional History Fair Seeks Volunteer Judges
Northern Illinois University Continuing and Professional Education is hosting the 58th Annual Northern Illinois Regional History Fair on February 22, 2020 in the Holmes Student Center in DeKalb. Each year hundreds of junior high and high school students from this northern region participate in the fair by writing research papers, designing websites, building exhibits, creating documentaries, and performing original skits that deal with topics of history. Papers and websites are judged in advance, but NIU still needs volunteer judges for the day of the fair. Those projects receiving a certain score will be eligible to move on to the state competition.
Each volunteer will judge in one of three categories: display exhibits, documentaries, and live performances. Volunteer judges need to arrive at the Holmes Student Center by 8:45 a.m. for judges’ orientation and instructions. All judging duties should be finished by 2 p.m.
There will be small continental breakfast refreshments while supplies last and a box lunch option while supplies last for volunteer judges.
If you are interested in being a volunteer judge, please fill out the online form located here: http://go.niu.edu/HistoryFairVolunteer
