Applied Management (B.S.)

General Information
Admission to the major is limited to students (1) holding an A.A.S. in a discipline directly related to the program emphasis, or students holding an A.A./A.S. degree, and (2) who can demonstrate that they have significant professional experience related to the program emphasis. Admission will be determined by the appropriate program emphasis faculty. All majors must meet NIU’s requirements for general education (21-33 hours), complete a minimum of 40 hours of course work at the 300-400 level, and earn a minimum of 30 hours at NIU. Up to 30 hours of proficiency credit can be applied toward the 120-credit-hour university graduation requirements with the approval of the department advisor and chair. The completion of a culminating experience (e.g., senior seminar, capstone course or project, or internship, etc.) is required.
B.S. in Applied Management Degree Completion Program
The B.S. in Applied Management (with an emphasis in either Instructional Technology, Training and Evaluation or Equity Leadership and Mentoring) degree completion program is designed to award credit to practicing professionals for their recent education and previous learning experiences in the area relevant to the proficiency credit being requested. In addition to the course requirements outlined below, up to 30 semester hours of credit may be awarded for documented prior learning through professional experiences and non-traditional learning in an area related to the emphasis. Credit will be awarded based on evaluation of a professional portfolio. These credits will be held in “escrow” and will be posted to the student’s transcript upon the completion of all designated course work for the applied management degree. Students interested in the B.S. in Applied Management degree completion program should contact a program advisor for a preadmission interview and course counseling session. Attained proficiency credits may be used for the majoring emphasis only and may not be applied to other emphases in the B.S. in Applied Management degree program. Students in these emphases are exempt from the 30 semester hour university residence requirement.
Emphasis in Instructional Technology, Training and Evaluation
The emphasis in Instructional Technology, Training and Evaluation is designed to provide students with occupationally-relevant skills and knowledge in the area of instructional design and assessment, training and learning media development, and human performance technology.
Students will acquire the conceptual and technical basis of instructional design, obtain hands-on experience with various interactive and evaluation technologies and programming, and have the opportunity to engage in collaborative works in authentic environments. Moreover, students will be participating in internships or portfolio development to gain valuable hands-on experience in the working world and increase their chances for future employment.
This is primarily an online program.

Accelerated B.S. in Applied Management with Emphasis in Instructional Technology, Training and Evaluation (BSAM-ITTE)/M.S. in Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (MSEREA)
Admission
This program leads to both the B.S. in Applied Management with Emphasis in Instructional Technology, Training and Evaluation and M.S. in Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (MSEREA). This program is open to all B.S. in Applied Management with Emphasis in Instructional Technology, Training and Evaluation majors who will have completed at least 9 credit hours of Emphasis specific courses with a 3.0 or better GPA. Up to 18 credit hours of Emphasis specific courses count towards both the M.S. and B.S. degrees.
Under the special provisions of this program, students who have met these standards must also apply and meet admission criteria for the M.S. in Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (MSEREA) program. A GRE is not required. Students must meet Graduate School application deadlines. Interested students should talk with an advisor as early as possible and are encouraged to apply during their junior year.

Students must complete all the requirements for the B.S. in Applied Management with Emphasis in Instructional Technology, Training and Evaluation and the general education requirements before admission. Beginning with the first semester of their final undergraduate year, students will start taking classes in the M.S. in Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (MSEREA) program. These courses will count toward the final 18 credits of the undergraduate degree. Upon receiving their undergraduate degree, students will work with an advisor to establish a timeline for completion of the MSEREA program.

Emphasis in Equity Leadership and Mentoring
The emphasis in Leadership and Mentoring equips students with the requisite skills to make a positive impact with colleagues and in the general workforce.
As socio-cultural changes have dramatically influenced the diversity of employment options, the need for adaptation of educational options for the changing demographic population, job expectations, and the constantly changing educational landscape of the global community must also be met. As such, this emphasis bridges the gap for employers who need individuals who can work collaboratively with language learners, informal educational agencies, and various local, state, regional, national, and international administrations.
