Experiential Learning Center Projects

You get an exclusive opportunity to serve as a consultant and work directly with the leaders of organizations on real-world business issues. In addition, you will build valuable project managementcommunication, and presentation skills.

As a member of an Experiential Learning Center (ELC) team, you will work with a faculty or business professional coach and other NIU graduate and undergraduate students to tackle a challenge faced by a real organization. All majors are encouraged to apply as projects need a cross-functional perspective. 

Serving as a consultant is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience and increase your marketability as you search for a job. Leaders of organizations are looking for employees with experience in problem-solving, communication skills, working in a team setting, and individual accountability. In addition, you will learn new skills, strengthen areas of improvement, and work with a team of diverse students from various majors.

Project topics include marketing strategies, financial strategies, business plan development, data analytics, and new product launch, to name a few. We are working with large companies, small companies, non-profit, domestic, and companies that conduct business internationally.

Spring 2024 Projects

Village of Pingree Grove, Illinois

Village Background: Pingree Grove thrives on community and offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for both active and laid-back lifestyles. The Village provides several parks and active recreational areas including a skate park, baseball and soccer fields, and a variety of playgrounds throughout the community. Over eight miles of bike and trails wind through the neighborhoods. An offering of youth activities is available in coordination with the Hampshire Park District.

Project Background: The leaders of the village would like an ELC team to create a strategic business plan that includes the structuring of their goals and action items and an implementation strategy over the next three years. The strategic plan will also include recruitment and retention of talent, marketing strategies to attract developers and new residents, and best practices for staffing in anticipation of growth.

Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)

Company Background: The Chicago Region SCCA strives to ensure that all participants in its events enjoy a welcoming environment. The Chicago Region SCCA supports equality of opportunity and treat for all participants. A commitment to a welcoming environment is expected of all its members and attendees.

Project Background: The leaders of the SCCA would like an ELC team of consultants to develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that maximizes all tools, expands brand recognition, attracts new members and sponsors or partners, and strengthens growth and sustainability. The project team will evaluate the use of data including collection methods and usefulness of current processes for storage.

Link Logistics

Company Background: Link Logistics is a leading owner of last-mile logistics real estate designed to meet the needs of the modern supply chain. Operating the largest portfolio of warehouses and business parks located exclusively in the United States, Link Logistics uses its scale, industry expertise and foundational focus on sustainability to power tomorrow’s economy. With more than 10,000 customers ranging from e-commerce giants to local family-run businesses, Link Logistics is building tomorrow’s supply chain.

Project Background: The leaders of Link Logistics would like an ELC team of consultants to research and evaluate ways for its People and Culture team to strategically leverage artificial intelligence tools to support, enhance and drive efficiency within common human resources activities and processes. These activities will be related to, but not limited to, total rewards, HR operations, talent management and development, and talent acquisition. In addition, the team will explore implications of employees using artificial intelligence to perform common human resources-related activities, such as writing performance reviews, completing self-evaluations, providing feedback, etc.

Libbie Health (New York)

Company Background: Libbie Health is a digital health startup founded by Colette Ellis, an experienced behavioral health coach, to provide convenient and culturally sensitive mental wellness solutions. Their flagship app, Libbie, provides on-demand stress relief using Emotional Freedom Technique - a simple tapping method clinically proven to reduce anxiety and depression. Users gain access to personalized EFT sessions, mood check-ins, and self-care reminders via the Libbie app to support their mental health in a culturally sensitive manner that respects their diverse identities and experiences.

Project Background: The leaders of Libbie Health are seeking an ELC team to analyze its current business model and financials to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for optimization. This will include benchmarking against industry standards and developing financial projections under various growth scenarios. The goal is to create a robust financial plan and model to attract future investors. The ELC team will also explore strategic partnerships and wider commercialization opportunities that could maximize Libbie Health's reach and revenue potential. The team will develop actionable recommendations in key areas like marketing, client acquisition, product development, and fundraising.

Belvidere Family YMCA

Company Background: The Belvidere Family YMCA is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization of more than 2,700 YMCAs located in 10,000 communities across the United States. Dedicated to strengthening the community it serves, the Belvidere Family YMCA focuses on developing the potential of youth, improving individual health and well-being, and giving back to and supporting communities.

Project Background: The leaders of the Belvidere Family YMCA would like an ELC team of consultants to develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that considers all available marketing tools. The team will develop strategies for expanding brand recognition in Boone County and the surrounding areas and will also look for opportunities for fundraising and growth. The team will consider a plan for growth and sustainability when it comes to membership and programmatic development.

Firehouse Grill

Company Background: Patrick Fowler owns three restaurants located in the Chicagoland area. Each restaurant provides a unique experience. The Candlelite Chicago restaurant in Rogers Park, Illinois, lights up the pizza scene with a margarita or "Candlelite White" tavern-style pizza. The Firehouse Grill, in Evanston, Illinois, is housed in a decommissioned firehouse where patrons relax with a cold beer and a char-grilled burger. Lastly, the Bluestone Bar and Grill in Evanston, Illinois, where customers enjoy fresh ingredients, menu variety and affordable prices. All of Fowler's restaurants are the preferred catering partners of Northwestern Athletics. Pat also owns a food manufacturing company in Evanston that distributes Candlelite Frozen pizzas so customers can get their famous tavern-style thin-crust pizza in local grocery stores or directly from the restaurants. Candlelite also has a new franchise company offering franchises across the country for the Candlelite Chicago concept.

Project Background: Fowler and the leaders of these businesses would like an ELC team to create a comprehensive marketing strategy. The strategy will consider all digital tools and resources to strengthen brand recognition and increase traffic. The ELC team will evaluate the current structure of the food manufacturing facility and identify strategies and best practices for the pursuit of packaging that best fits their economic need. The team will also develop strategies for Fowler to strengthen growth and sustainability.

Cognes Medical Solutions (Sweden-based company)

Company Background: Dementia has been declared a public health emergency with over 50 million cases worldwide. Cognes Medical Solutions has developed a smart phone-based solution that makes it easy and painless to identify individuals who are at risk of developing dementia. Receiving treatment before symptoms appear can increase their chances of extending years in quality of life, which is why it is important to detect signs early. 60 percent of cases are diagnosed too late when its effects are irreversible.

Project Background: The leaders of Cognes Medical Solutions would like an ELC team of consultants to develop an international go-to-market strategy. The ELC team will also evaluate the cost structure for opportunities to strengthen growth and sustainability and will deliver strategies for Cognes to consider for commercialization.

Lakeshore Recycling Systems

Company Background: Headquartered in Morton Grove, IL., LRS is Chicago's leading recycling and waste diversion provider. LRS was born in 2012 by way of a merger between two of Chicago's strongest waste recycling companies: Lakeshore Waste Services and Recycling Systems, Inc. LRS serves 658 schools in the Chicago Public School system and actively participates in the City of Chicago's Blue Cart Residential Recycling Program.

Project: The leadership of LRS would like a team of consultants to develop strategies to improve employee retention. More information will be revealed at the discovery meeting.

Chocolaterie Stam

Company Background: The Stam family has been in the confectionery business for over 100 years. The Master Chocolatier is the great, great, great, great, great, grandson of the first baker. A Dutch-based company, Chocolaterie Stam, takes pride in treating every employee and customer as an extension of their family. They offer the highest quality products.

Project: Chocolaterie Stam, Glen Ellyn, wants an ELC team of consultants to develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that includes market research, website design, and a marketing strategy that makes this location the first choice of patrons. The marketing strategy will consist of messaging regarding events and how to strengthen their position in the market. Are there other opportunities Chocolaterie Stam, Glen Ellyn should pursue? This team will help make that determination.

Echo Global Logistics

Project: The leadership of Echo Global Logistics has engaged a team of consultants to evaluate the profitability, efficacy, and business acumen of a new system for managing the transportation of freight.

Acirah Health

Company Background: ACIRAH Health is working to eliminate healthcare disparities by increasing the enrollment of African Americans in clinical trials. ACIRAH's mission is to further empower African Americans with the tools to enhance their health outcomes, overall wellness, and lifestyle.

Project: The leaders of ACIRAH health would like a team of consultants to develop a business plan strategy that includes messaging, marketing, and a pitch deck. The team of consultants will evaluate the current landscape, utilize available data, and create a strategy to position ACIRAH in front of the target population.

One Voice One Team

Coach: Russell Page

Topic: Market Entry/Market Expansion

Company Background: Since 2005, the One Voice One Team (OVOT) staff have worked with over 700 schools and have engaged over 3000,000 youth. From the launch of the first summer camp in 2005 to incorporating as a Non-Profit organization to 2008, to recognition by the United Way for the work done with youth (primarily young men in the black community), OVOT empowers youth to use their skills and talents to better themselves, redefine their possibilities and give back to the community through service.

Project: The leaders of OVOT want an ELC team of consultants to map out a strategy for expansion to the Chicagoland area. This project will help OVOT determine the best course of action for market entry.

McDonald’s

Coach: Martin Ndicu

Topic: Asset Management/Data Analysis

Company Background: In 1955 Ray Kroc, a native Chicagoan, founded McDonald’s System, Inc., and opened the first McDonald’s in Des Plaines, IL.  By 1958 McDonald’s had sold its 100 millionth hamburger.  Ray Kroc wanted to build a restaurant system that would be famous for providing food of consistently high quality and uniform methods of preparation.  He wanted to serve burgers, fries, and beverages that tasted just the same in Alaska as they did in Alabama.  He created the slogan “in business for yourself, but not by yourself”

Project: Asset Management Optimization  

  • Issue:  There is an opportunity to improve asset management at McDonald’s.  Having a global CMDB (Configuration management database) that contains information on hardware/software components and their relationships to each other is critical for many of our services and solutions to function, and what we currently have in place is limited and not consistently maintained.  This project would help to address this problem by:  
    • Identifying industry best practices around Asset Management  
      • What information to collect, effective tagging, prioritization, integration, etc.  
      • How to keep data maintained and relevant  
    • Researching solutions that could add value to Asset Management  
      • Tools that orchestrate the asset management process  
      • Integrations with other solutions already in our environment (ServiceNow, Qualys, Cloud Environments, etc.)

Company Background: Forward Steps believes in every foster youth's potential to shatter the statistics and achieve their dreams.  Forward Steps fills an important gap that helps ensure collegiate success by combining financial assistance, mentorship, life-skills training, and individualized support to current and former foster youth attending college.  Forward Steps is the only Colorado-based organization that focuses solely on foster youth by providing them with the financial and emotional tools to complete their college education.  

Project: The leadership of Forward Steps would like an ELC team to develop recommendations to strengthen their marketing strategies, expand their reach, and improve brand recognition.

Maternal 911

Coach: Jacie Collum

Company Background: Founders Shelly and Michelle have a passion for Women’s health and maternal safety.  They believe educated health care professionals are empowered to provide quality maternal care.  Shelly brings 28 years while Michelle brings 23 years of obstetric experience.  Maternal 911 offers programs to better prepare healthcare professionals for the many challenges associated with pregnancy.  Courses such as the Maternal Safety Program is an online multi-module course designed to provide updated education to all health care providers working at the bedside of a pregnant woman.  For emergency personnel/first responders there is a short course that involves simulations associated with high acuity low occurring situations.  The goal is to reduce maternal morbidity through early recognition, accurate assessment, and implementation of the best course of treatment. 

Project: Project topics-The founders need help in the following areas:

  • Leapfrog maternity data or MI-AIM data (for each state) 
  • Department changes based upon pre and post completion of the program 
  • Ease of obtaining pretest and posttest scores for each participant/organization from the LMS (EdVance 360)

The Literacy Council

Project: The leadership of The Literacy Council would like a team of consultants to evaluate their current marketing and communication strategy. Additionally, they would like recommendations on improving their brand awareness, recognition, and visibility of programs and services offered.

The leaders believe it is time to expand their market reach and are interested in research and evidence-based solutions. This will include evaluating the competitive landscape, the most logical relationships to develop, and the proper launch process.

Rockford Rescue Mission

Project Scope: The Rockford Rescue Mission leadership would like a team of consultants to evaluate their current marketing and communication strategy specific to the Works! Center. The leadership of RRM wishes to expand its market reach and find ways to increase brand recognition in the Rockford Region.

OpenLoop

OpenLoop is a web-platform designed to help match healthcare providers with hospitals and other facilities that require extra staffing assistance. OpenLoop makes the search easy by collecting all the current job needs, centralizing the provider database, and notifying you based on your location and specialty when opportunities arise.  OpenLoop’s mission is to improve community health through accelerated delivery of patient service. Their matching system ensures that more time is spent practicing medicine and saving lives. 

The leadership of OpenLoop would like an ELC team of consultants to help them expand their marketing strategies and market reach. The leaders of OpenLoop are looking for ways to optimize the marketing channels, find new avenues to access, and ways to enter new markets.

Caterpillar (CAT) is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. The company is also a founding corporate sponsor of the BELIEF Program in the College of Business.

Project Topics: Vertical Integration (VI) for Manufacturing Companies with High Capital Intensity

Companies use tools and processes for key business decisions such as Make/Buy decisions, New Product Introduction (NPI) program prioritization, Major investments, etc.CAT would like an ELC team to establish a nucleus of such process/tool (or at least a set of "lenses") to guide the decision whether or not to pursue vertical integration (VI).

The CAT leadership is interested in a literature search of successful and unsuccessful examples of best practices of VI manufacturing which will include a comprehensive literature search of successful as well as unsuccessful examples and best practices of VI manufacturing companies. The data search will help form identify quantifiable business metrics /KPIs/other factors that are most relevant. Areas of focus are cost reduction opportunities, capital intensity, technological complexity relative to known CAT competencies, competitive advantage potential, etc. This process will include a SWOT, decision framework, data analysis, and a financial model template. This team will need to consider the market demand uncertainty in their exploration.

Superbetter would like an ELC team of consultants to strengthen their market reach, develop a marketing strategy to position SuperBetter as the primary option to help individuals with mental health challenges.  SuperBetter is interested in finding investors and an evaluation of the best approach to enter the best market.

Rust-Oleum would like an ELC team of consultants to develop an online marketing strategy that will strongly position their Varathane brand of interior wood stain and wood care products. This team will complete a thorough SWOT analysis of Varathane's online presence and shopper journey and compare to key competitors. This team will present both their findings and strategic recommendations on how to enhance Varathane's online presence to be more market competitive and grow market share of the wood care category

In 1955 Ray Kroc, a native Chicagoan, founded McDonald’s System, Inc., and opened the first McDonald’s in Des Plaines, IL.  By 1958 McDonald’s had sold its 100 millionth hamburger.  Ray Kroc wanted to build a restaurant system that would be famous for providing food of consistently high quality and uniform methods of preparation.  He wanted to serve burgers, fries and beverages that tasted just the same in Alaska as they did in Alabama.  He created the slogan “in business for yourself, but not by yourself”. 

McDonald’s would like an ELC team of consultants to help them navigate their internal communications challenges.  With several technological ways for them to communicate, the leaders at McDonald’s wish to streamline the communications system and need recommendations on the most effective way to maintain organizational events, meetings, and other forms of communication across their vast organization.  More will unfold as the team evaluates the organizational landscape.

Rockford Park District

The Rockford Park District (RPD) has been a part of the Rockford and surrounding communities since 1909 and is the third-largest park and recreation system in Illinois.  The RPD began for two main reasons, the need for quality family time to keep the family unit together and keep kids (particularly) young boys out of trouble. Levin Faust, the RPD founder, dreamed of living in a community where residents could enjoy places of beauty. Joseph Lee, the father of the playground movement, believed that play is not a luxury but a necessity and is recreation and the renewal of life for adults while serving to grow and gain life for children.

There are several topics the leadership of RPD would like an ELC consultant team to address;  Areas such as pricing of services and programs, KPI development to help make strategic business-related decisions, human resources, employee engagement, recruitment, and talent management may include analyzing staff ratio to benchmark against other districts. Facilities assessment regarding business plan development.  An overall evaluation of data to help determine the best course of action for many areas pertinent to operating a large park district system.
